Outside the Box

It seems that every place you work these days asks you to "think outside the box". The problem is, what are the dimensions of this fictional box? For instance, I want to promo my books...

The normal channels of promotion are web sites, blog tours, book signings, bookmarks and postcards that you send out, media announcements (including paper, online, radio, etc.), videos, contests, social networking sites, reader loops, reviews, and so on. So where do I go to get outside the box?

This topic has been the subject of discussions on several of the author loops I belong to. As authors, we already spend so much of our time on promos that we have very little left for writing. And many of them cost us dearly as well. So what do I do to get outside the box and get my books noticed?

Does anyone have any suggestions? ;)
